Long Beach Port Votes To Postpone Cargo Fees
The commission that governs the Port of Long Beach has voted to postpone a new fee designed to fund infrastructure projects.
The Board of Harbor Commissioners voted Monday to delay collecting a $6 per container fee until at least July 2010. The board cited the economic downturn and decline in international trade. The ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles had planned to use the proposed Infrastructure Cargo Fee to fund highway and rail upgrades and other infrastructure projects. With that funding source gone, the commissioners urged staff to seek other federal stimulus funds to make up for the shortfall. The board also voted to cut the rates that international shippers pay to move cargo into other ships.
The ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles combined represent the nation's largest port complex.
